John Macker & Todd Moore | Mountainair, New Mexico, Summer 2006

Todd and I met for our last lunch together a couple of months ago in Albuquerque. He brought with him a few books he’d been reading. One was a thick book on the mythology of the contemporary frontier, another a slim volume on Mayakovsky. Another book I don’t remember, but his excitement for them, for literature in general, was sincere and infectious. Absorbing Todd’s love of books was like loving writing itself. He had a schoolboy’s crush on outlaw literature…John Macker

s.a. griffin |venus in the badlands

You’ve been in my thoughts and heart all day long my friend. We’ve just lost one of the great ones. I’ve been dealing with it all day long, had to leave the house, be with people. This is a tough one.

I think you might already have seen this. A pic and tribute I did for Todd a few years ago, posing with one of his favorite Bowie knives.

yrs,

The Way of The Pen

– for Todd Moore

write blood in mouth
spray words
& infect everything with it

a

pump barking dogma
full of smoldering reason
& take the false teeth
out of the emergency

a

burn in the shadows
dressed in long knives
aaa& sing
aaaaaayour first song
like it is
aaaaaaalways your
aaaaaaaaalast

a

eat everything

alex gildzen | looking for the blood of elizabeth short

for Todd Moore……………………………!

the walk
from Florentine Gardens
to Boardner’s
is quick
on a quake afternoon

the pavement
she walkd
is gone

now names of stars
she never knew
are buried
in a dazzle
like the glitter
on her grave

her name
isn’t there
but she illumines
Hollywood Blvd
forever

there is blood
& then
there is blood

her blood
one of the great
vanishing acts
of the 20th century

her pieces
the first step
toward stardom

tour guides tell
busloads
which buildings
she may have
lived in
more buildings
than suspects
in her killing

each new book
finds her blood
in another place

all that blood
vanishd

but her pieces
still there
immaculate
on Hollywood Blvd
between Florentine Gardens
& Boardner’s

s.a. griffin | for todd moore’s 70th

What It Is

– for Todd Moore’s 70th

said The Kid is 3 score
& 10 & the lingering musk of
pussy tingling on the tongue of time
the poem dancing in the raw
like an outlaw
under some eyeless sun
& the feeling that
there is still something left
& juice enough
to get it right
between the lines
between the sheets
between the devil & the
distractions

what it is said The Kid
is the machinery of Dillinger’s
opus magic poking stars into
the epic story of this godless nite
working the duende big dick
fearless my great act of faith
as the poem dangling from
death’s tree bleeding into
the earth like so many
lost metaphors flickering
in the back seat of a Chevy
made for fucking & a quick
getaway

what it is said The Kid
is one more dream amigo
one well placed word like a
shot in the dark
& the truth somewhere in the
winking eye of a great whale
on some lonesome highway
south of any moral
north you could conjure
while rimming the gold
off Billie’s blonde peach
your hot hard
Thompson spilling
like a prayer

FOR TODD MOORE’S BIRTHDAY PARTY
[read in a gruff, gravelly voice]

put all your guns away Todd you’re
70 now and your reflexes ain’t what
they used to be you might hurt someone
I know your packin heavy this soiree here
looks chancy, you keep your back to the wall
I’ll watch the other side, lookit I know
six or seven of your guns are in pawn, just
give me them pawn tickets and I’ll get ’em on over
to Snoozer Jackson down at the Mineshaft
to offset your bar tab, okay? and that one
you loaned to Kell just forget about it, you’ll
never get that one back, he got
drunk and tried to buttfuck Cabbage,
‘course Cabbage didnt take too well to that,
grabbed the gun but missed and now Kell
can’t quit blinking, so Pockmark McGhee
took the gun away from the both of them and
tossed it in the stewpot where Diamondtooth
Mary said it’d put some flavor on things,
and I know you got ten or twenty guns
under the bed, three or four of them the
G.I. men would like to talk to you about but
why you left that one on the front
seat is beyond me the stupid punks from
down on the corner broke the window even
though the door wasnt locked, the lock hasnt
worked in four or five years ever since
you broke the key off in there, and
Bill the Wheel said him and Capshaw never
did mean to quote unquote lose your granddad’s
old shotgun, which coincidently went missing
around the same time Stinky Caldwell disappear’d
‘course Stinky was messing around with Doris w/
the big jugs, and her husband, who’s locked up,
could have called in a favor from ol’ Goose
who’s impartial to no one, fact is, Goose
Johnson’d murder his own dogs if they got
in the way of his beer
no, Todd, it’s time to disarm
put the arsenal up on eBay
here’s a flyswatter, maybe you can catch
a few of them flies swarming
around your rocking chair
